 I really like the way these two glowed in the morning sun.  They were just sitting there, waiting for 2013.  I'm happy I got their colour and shape down.  

Mi piace molto come queste due splendevano nel sole mattutino.  Stavano semplicmente seduti lì, aspettando il 2012.  Sono contenta che sono riuscita ad azzeccare il loro colore e forma.

Many of you have asked me to do more red fruit.  It's difficult to find this color fruit in the winter, but luckily there are apples.

Molti di voi mi avete chiesto di dipingere della frutta rossa.  E' difficile trovare questo colore di frutta nel inverno ma fortunatamente ci sono le mele.

Yesterday we were invited to Christmas dinner at my friend Marianne's house.  I thought of making a little centerpiece wreath with the tree clippings from around Porchiano but the outcome looked like a mouse's funerary wreath!  I saw it this morning and added the apple to the center.

Ieri siamo stati invitati al pranzo di Natale a casa della mia amica Marianne.  Pensavo di fare una ghirlanda per il centrotavola con i ritagli degli alberi di Porchiano ma il risultato sembrava una ghirlanda funeraria per topolini!  L'ho visto stamattina e ho aggiunto la mela al centro.

As I sat down to paint these two, I was called away from the easle.  The wood delivery man had arrived with a load of about 1000kg for the next few months.  I had to put it all away in the cantina and then after about an hour, get back to finish the painting.

Mentre che mi stavo iniziare a dipingere questi due qualcuno ha bussato alla porta.  Era l'uomo della legna che mi stava consegnando 12 quintali per i prossimi mesi.  Ho dovuto metterla via nella cantina e dopo circa un ora sono tornata per finire il dipinto.

I haven't painted in 3 days and when I sat down in front of the easle this morning, I noticed that two onions and a garlic had started sprouting.  They looked so sweet with their green vigor defying winter's cold.

Non avevo dipinto da 3 giorni e quando mi sono seduta davanti al cavalletto stamattina, mi sono accorta che due cipolle ed un aglio avevano iniziato a spuntare.  Erano così dolce con il loro verde vigoroso che sfida il freddo dell'inverno.

I don't know what these pear's name is, I asked the Maroccan fruit vendor in Amelia what they're called and he answered "Miss, they're pears!".

I met the ceramist Celina Fontana over the weekend, found out she lives just kilometers from me.  I fell in love with the essential designs of her ceramics and bought one of her cups, and here it is!

I wanted to paint something colorful, and stay away from the onions.  Last night I bought some mandarines from Natalino, the fruit vendor next door.  I liked the way this little one is sitting on the plate.

I bought this little pudding tin some weeks ago, and here it is.  I like that you can see the reflection of the mandarine and vase in it.

I never know what I'm going to paint until I sit down in front of the easle.  It's surrounded by a casting call of onions, garlic, apples, oranges and old pomegranates.  Didn't want to paint another mandarine, so I undressed this one a little until I liked it enough to paint it.

Non so mai cosa dipingerò finchè non mi siedo davanti al cavalletto.  Sembra un casting di cipolle, aglio, mele, arance e vecchi melograni.  Non volevo dipingere un altro mandarino, così ho svestito questo un pò finche mi è piaciuto abbastanza per dipingerlo.

It's really cold outside, minus something.  I was looking for something to paint this morning and didn't want to do another onion.  I picked these wild flowers the other afternoon, I don't recall what they're called.  Their cool colors reflect the temprature outside.

Fa molto freddo fuori, meno qualcosa.  Stavo cercando qualcosa da dipingere stamattina e non volevo fare un altra cipolla.  Avevo raccolto questi fiori selvatici l'altro pomeriggio, non mi ricordo come si chiamano.  I colori freddi riflettono la temperatura che c'è fuori.

I couldn't help but paint this onion.  It sprouted since it's last sitting on friday.  I promise that tomorrow will bring a colourful, perhaps fruitful painting.

Definitely in a 'garlic and onion' mood.  I know that both of these have medicinal qualities, I like their colors and shapes.

The real autumn cold is finally here.  I opened my window and the ice breeze came in.  I bundled myself in a blanket and warm cap and painted these two.

Il freddo, quello vero autunnale è finalmente arrivato.  Ho aperto la finestra ed è entrata la brezza gelata.  Mi sono avvolta in una coperta e messa un cappellino per dipingere queste due.

It rained all night with thunder and lightning, continuing this morning.  It was so dark.  I was laughing to myself as I painted this onion, thinking 'i can' even f... see this onion!'.  I painted it by intuition and mixed my paints by memory.  

Ha piovuto tutta la notte con tuoni e lampi, fino a stamattina.  Era così scuro fuori.  Stavo ridendo da sola mentre dipingevo questa cipolla, e pensavo 'non posso neanche vedere sta fot... cipolla!'. L'ho dipinta coll'intuito e ho mescolato i colori usando la memoria.

I really like these 'golden' onions.  They're not really golden, they look more like copper.  They shine in the morning winter light.

Mi piacciono molto queste cipolle 'dorate'.  Non sono veramente dorate, assomigliano più al rame.  Brillano nella luce invernale mattutina.

The fog was thick this morning as I sat down to paint these two.  I couldn't actually see them very well at first.  They glowed in the cool morning light.

These two came out kinda pasty this morning.  I like that.  The pomegranate is starting to really get old, it's lost its' roundness.

Up until now, I've always painted raw fruits and vegetables, and an occasional flower and vase.  Today I've painted 'processed' foods: bread and wine.  It's what Norman Bryson would call the shift from 'nature' to 'culture'.  

Fino ad adesso, ho sempre dipinto frutta e verdura cruda con qualche fiore occasionale.  Oggi ho dipinto del cibo 'trasformato': pane e vino.  E' quello che Norman Bryson chiamerebbe lo spostarsi da 'natura' a 'cultura'.

I started painting this pomegranate early this cloudy morning, could barely see it at first.  This is one of those old fruits that's lost it's roundness, I like it.

The beautiful pomegrantes that I painted some days ago are starting to get old, as they age their color becomes darker and their surface loses its' roundess.  I like them just the same.

I bellisimi melograni che avevo dipinto quanche giorno fa iniziano a diventare vecchi, e man mano che invecchiano diventano più scure e la superficie perde di rotondità.  Mi piacciono lo stesso.

These flowers grow around Porchiano del Monte, where I live.  I don't know what they're called.  They're not dandilions, they look more like yellow daisies.  I like the symetry in it.

Questi fiori crescono intorno a dove vivo, Porchiano del Monte.  Non so come si chiamano, sembrano delle marcherite gialle.  Mi piace la simmetria che ha.

I have all sorts of oranges in the kitchen.  The foggy morning light came in through my window this morning and gradually illuminated it, I like the way it glows.

This morning I saw these beautiful garlic sitting in a basket in my kitchen.  I love the white on white play and how these seem to emerge from the background.

A friend of mine, Jacopo Arcangeli, had given me some of his family's apples.  This one was small and flat on one side.  Kind of strange to paint, kind of looked deflated.

The autumn light is lower than the summer light and nowadays I find myself painting around midday.  I was in such a rush this afternoon that I've just now managed to post this little guy.

The sun came out slowly this morning and I could barely see this pomegranate at first.  It revealed itself a little bit at a time.

This plum has been sitting around my easel for weeks.  I don't know why it hasn't decomposed.  The older it gets the darker it is.  I love the contrast between it and the lemon.

Questa prugna sta intorno al mio cavalletto da settimane.  Non so perchè non si decompone.  Più invecchia, più diventa scrura.  Amo il contrasto che c'è fra questa ed il limone.

This was not an easy fruit to paint with all those little seeds.  I think I prefer to do the closed fruit instead.

This morning there was absolutely no sun.  It was torrentiously raining and the natural light was practically nil.  After lunch I saw this lemon sitting in the clutter around my easl, glowing on its own.

Questa mattina non c'era niente di sole.  Fuori stava piovendo molto forte e la luce naturale era inesistente.  Dopo pranzo ho visto questo limone seduto fra il disordine intorno al cavalletto, brillava da solo.

Yesterday afternoon I went to Giuliana's and Gabriele's to pick up some fresh eggs.  Giuliana was cutting and cleaning these little red apples from her vegetable patch in Palliccio.  She saw that I liked them and opened a second cantina so I could help myself to these.

Ieri pomeriggio sono passata da Giuliana e Gabriele per prendere delle uova fresche.  Giuliana stava tagliando e pulendo queste piccole mele rosse del suo orto giù a Palliccio.  Ha visto che mi piacevano, così mi ha aperto la seconda cantina e ne ho preso queste due.

As I was walking the dog this morning, I spotted this Pink Oleandre in front of my neighbor's house.  I liked its' simplicity, especially the leaves.

Mentre che portavo fuori il cane stamattina, ho visto questo Oleandro Rosa davanti alla casa dei miei vicini.  Mi piaceva la sua semplicità, specialmente le foglie.

Many people have asked me to paint flowers in the last few months.  Sure, why not?  I've been spotting them around where I live and saw these Pervinka on my doorstep.  I thought they could do the job.  The little blue vase is one of those collectable miniatures that old ladies like to dust off on their furniture.

Nei mesi scorsi, molte persone mi avevano chiesto di dipingere dei fiori.  Perchè no?  Ho visto diversi intorno a dove abito ma poi mi hanno chiamato l'attenzione queste Pervinka sui gradini di casa.  Mi sembrano giusti.  Il vase piccolo è uno di quelle miniature da collezione che tutte le vecchiette amano spolverare come sopramobile.
